General Osteopathic Manual Manipulation (OMM)

Dr. Johnson, Dr. Lazare and Dr. O’Oneil are highly skilled in classical OMM. This therapy is for children and adults of all ages. What is OMM? In medicine, “manipulation” is defined as the therapeutic application of manual pressure or force. OMM, also called Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), is a form of manipulation that: • Is the generic term used to refer to many different manipulation techniques • Can be used to treat structural and functional issues in the bones, joints, tissues, and muscles of the body • Uses the relationship between the neuromusculoskeletal system and the rest of the body to restore functionality and/or remove barriers to motion and healing • Achieves and maintains patient health as part of a whole system of evaluation and treatment. Common techniques used in our practice include: counter-strain, myofascial release both passive and active, direct and in-direct manipulation techniques, chapman’s reflex’s, visceral and mesenteric manipulation, cranial sacral therapy, fascial unwinding, range of motion, lymphatic pump, muscle energy technique and integrated neuromuscular release as well as rhythmical massage therapy (Dr. Lazare). These techniques can be used for neuro-muscular conditions, sports and joint injuries, arthritic changes, chronic pain and to enhance general metabolic and regulatory functions in the body. Using the concept of somatic dysfunction, these techniques can also influence many chronic illnesses such as digestive issues, asthma, COPD and most other organ related challenges.
